Update on the Main Street Project

Here is the current update from the Nebraska Dept. of Roads. The first portion, tearing out a section of Main St. went quickly. Hopefully it will continue to be done in as timely a manner as is possible.

The current controlling operation for construction of this project is now Utilities Work – sanitary sewer.  Midlands Contracting, Inc. is planning to mobilize (2) crews onto the IN VALENTINE project with one working on sanitary sewer and the other crew working on storm sewer placement. Expect mobilization to begin with 10+ semi loads of equipment and materials to be delivered to the work area. Preparations are being made to begin work April 4th.

What to expect this week:

Effectiveness of Temporary Traffic Control

  • Continued monitoring of the Traffic flow may require additional traffic control and/or changes in Traffic Control planning depending on effectiveness of detour signing.
  • Additional Detour signs planned, pending locate for utilities.
  • w/w contractor to change out Temporary Traffic Signal Light to  multi-lane intersection application.

Utilities

  • Contractor to mobilization (2) crews onto project.
  • Construction surveying and staking for placement of utilities

Sidewalk Requirements and Pedestrian Accommodations

The following guidelines are to help business understand planned sidewalk construction adjacent to entry ways.

  • Contractor may be allowed to close and detour pedestrians if alternate entrances are available and approved by respective business owners
  • Phase the construction of sidewalks adjacent to entry ways during non-typical work hours.
  • Furnish and install temporary ramps or provide other means to access building, as necessary, across freshly poured sidewalk areas.
  • Complete access closure to businesses during operational hours or emergency services cannot occur.
  • phase the sidewalk removals to leave a minimum four-foot-wide sidewalk in place to accommodate pedestrian access to businesses
  • furnish, install and maintain temporary construction fencing.
  • pedestrian detours shall be clearly posted

Current planning has left more than the required 4’ wide sidewalk in place when possible. This sidewalk next to the buildings will stay in place until roadway and curb are built.
